We all have a fear of something. If your fear happens to be visiting the dentist’s office, we still don’t want you to miss out on the many benefits of receiving proper oral health care. That is why we offer sleep dentistry at Woodstock Dental Centre. In addition to dentistry while you sleep, we also offer milder forms of sedation for people with less anxiety and for less severe treatments.
Our board-certified anaesthesiologist, Dr. Jon Lok, exercises great care in selecting candidates for sedation. Whether it’s a mild sedative, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), or sleep dentistry, our goal has always been to provide patients with a completely stress-free experience — and so as safely as possible.
To qualify for in-office sedation, all patients must have a current medical examination, a comprehensive review of current medications, as well as complete a thorough questionnaire and exam by Dr. Lok.
Depending on your age, health, and typical level of anxiety, there are varying levels of sedation available to you.
For those with slight anxieties in visiting the dentist, we are able to offer Nitrous Oxide Sedation , otherwise known as “laughing gas.” This type of sedation is seen as pain-free and comforting by most patients. We can also utilize freezing or numbing agents for many types of procedures.
For those that prefer to be generally aware of the procedure, but are open to dozing off, we can offer a more moderate form of sedation. Due to the type of sedation, you will most likely have little memory of your visit. We can also numb or “freeze” certain areas in order to provide the utmost in comfort and a virtually pain-free experience. If you do experience discomfort, we can safely take you to a deeper level of sedation.
Want to sleep through your appointment? Whether if it’s just for a general cleaning, wisdom teeth removal, or any type of procedure, we can offer safe, deep sedation and sleep dentistry services.

Sleep dentistry (more accurately called sedation dentistry) uses medication to help you feel relaxed, calm and reduce anxiety during your dental procedure.
Minimal/Light (Nitrous Oxide): You inhale "laughing gas." You're awake, aware and relaxed.
Moderate (Oral Sedation): You take a pill. You feel very drowsy and may drift in and out of sleep, with little memory of the event.
Deep (IV Sedation): Medication is given through an IV. This is a deeper "twilight sleep" where you are conscious but unlikely to remember anything.
General Anesthesia: You are completely unconscious (asleep).
No, you won't be completely asleep (unless you opt for General Anesthesia).
For most conscious sedation methods (oral or IV), you are awake but deeply relaxed. You won't feel bothered and the procedure's sounds and sights won't register.
Most patients report having no memory (amnesia) or only fragmented memories of the time they were sedated, which is often the main benefit for anxious patients.
Answer: Yes, it is very safe when administered by a qualified professional.
Safety is ensured by a thorough review of your medical history beforehand and you will be continuously monitored (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels) by trained staff throughout the entire process.
YES, absolutely, for almost all types of sedation.* If you receive Oral Sedation, IV Sedation or General Anesthesia you will need to have a responsible adult accompany you home and stay with you for several hours. Your judgment and coordination will be impaired.
The only exception is Nitrous Oxide which wears off quickly enough for you to drive yourself.
Sedation dentistry is good for anyone who:
Has moderate to severe dental anxiety or phobia.
Has a strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment.
Needs a complex or lengthy procedure that can be done in one visit.
Has trouble keeping their mouth open or sitting still for long periods.
